IDEAS for Schools

Over the past few years LAWSA has held a number of successful ‘ Ideas Competitions’ for schools in our area. These have proven to be a great success, and the local schools have now encouraged LAWSA to run the event on an annual basis, so it can be incorporated into the main curriculum.

These events involve a number of the local schools and seek to improve pupils awareness of design (differentiate between good and bad), environmental issues, conservation issues, landscaping and economic issues.

Schools are allocated local Architects, and pupils are helped to identify a problem and come up with an imaginative idea to address that issue.

After consultation with some of the teachers, we have agreed to move the IDEAS Competition back to the winter term.

IDEAS 2007 will be take place over the Winter Term in 2007.

The classroom side of the project takes place during a period of around 6 – 8 weeks, and begins with an exciting introduction to the subject and the competition by the allocated Architect.  The event concludes with a grand exhibition of all the pupil’s work, followed by a prize giving ceremony.

In 2004 there were over 30 entries, from around 250 pupils. A total prize fund of £1500 was distributed between 12 prize winners. The event was judged by a panel of local dignitaries including the Regional President of the RIBA.

The 2007 Ideas Competition will soon be underway, with the classroom phase of the competition starting in September 2007. Please contact LAWSA if you require any details of  how your school can enter this event in future years.

The IDEAS 2007 Exhibition will be shown again as part of  National Architecture Week
